After a thorough risk assessment, the need to increase the safety level and automation in a bucket wheel excavator was identified.
To meet the identified safety requirements, a complete modernization project was developed for the machine’s displacement mechanism and monitoring of the boom structure rotation.
With Hübner Giessen solutions that feature robust design dedicated to mining applications, Profinet SIL3 encoders were installed in the rotation mechanism and Profibus encoders in the displacement system, with HKS couplings used in both cases to ensure mechanical transmission reliability and the safety level required for the application.
